My name is Leah Jones I am the course leader of a course called Positive You which aims to work with people who have learning disabilities to give them good confidence and self esteem.
I am passionate about the rights of people with Downs Syndrome which is a genetic condition from birth. Back in the early days people with Down Syndrome were often discriminated against, whilst lot’s has imporved, some attitudes towards us needs to be changed.
My event Celebrate Me is about celebrating the lives of people with Down Syndrome and to raise awareness of the condition for World Downs Syndrome Day. I wanted this workshop to show people who have Downs Syndrome that they have a right to speak out and feel good about themselves, and to give the people closest to them a positive outlook on their futures.
The workshop was a drop in event at Brindley Theatre in Runcorn on Saturday 18th March 2017. I invited people to decorate a piece of bunting which is a party decoration used at celebratory occasions. These were decorated paints, fabric coloured pens, ribbons, buttons, numbers and letters.
Organising this event made me feel like I am doing something to help people to raise awareness about learning disability, I feel like I am giving something back. My future aspiration is to exhibit this bunting in Glasgow for the International Downs Syndrome Congress in 2018.
