thoughts on an article: sex, marriage and consent

I saw an article the other day that really got me thinking. In this article a couple who have Down Syndrome were awarded £10,000 in damages after his local council banned his wife from having sex with him. This is because a council psychologist said he wasn’t able to consent in the relationship.

This kind of treatment of learning disabled people is so unfair. This couple was not treated with respect as it was assumed that the man didn’t understand what consent means. If he couldn't consent, then why was he married?

Whilst I know consent is a very important and complicated topic, I think it’s down to supporting and educating couples with learning disabilities about their choices in relationships, not taking the easy road by simply splitting couples up.

It scares me that the council were even able to separate a couple in this way.

Every couple deserves to find love, disability or not, and have their relationships taken seriously.
